Greater Manchester Police held a community event today (Sunday 30 March) to celebrate their 40th birthday.

Tuesday will mark the official day that GMP came into existence but officers wanted to hold an event with the community to mark the occasion.

PCSO Jenny George, who organised the event with the help of David Kilcourse and Beverley Green from Blue Rose Gifts in Heywood, said: “Whenever people have birthdays they have a party so we decided to have a party with the local community were people could come out and enjoy themselves.”

The event included a children’s play area, a bouncy castle, games, stalls and appearances from characters Micky Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Pepa Pig
and PCSO Steve.

Jenny added: “Each division is holding celebrations and this is how we decided to celebrate.”

The event also included a history of the police force once it became GMP. A roll call of officers killed in the line of duty was also on display.

Entertainment was also provided and included performances from Middleton Popstars, as well as street dance performances and music from DJ Miss H.

Blue Rose Gifts and Perfect Image Studio helped to organise the event, which included a number of local businesses from the area of Middleton and Heywood. “We worked with Blue Rose Gifts because they hold a number of events so we went to them for their knowledge and expertise and then have included a number of people from Heywood and Middleton,” said Jenny.

The family fun day was held at Heywood Civic Centre from 11.00am until 3.00pm.

“We have been busy since we started this morning so it has been a good day,” said Jenny.
