DEAR Initiative at Siddal Moor
Date published: 28 March 2014
D.E.A.R. stands for “Drop Everything and Read,” a national month-long celebration of reading designed to remind people of all ages to make reading a priority activity in their lives.
Siddal Moor is introducing a number of literacy initiatives within year 7. One of these is the DEAR. Whilst in lesson over the next 2 week period students will be told that it is “DEAR” time and they will stop what they are doing and read a book or other piece of writing and read for 10 minutes.
Staff at the school has all been given a banner, which they can display in classrooms or on office doors which will inform pupils what they are currently reading.
10 Reading Mentors from Year 9 have also been chosen and will read with the Year 7 students during form time, this will happen 3 times a week with all of the Year 7 forms taking part.
“It is hoped that this initiative will promote reading for enjoyment rather than a chore and that the students will come to understand the importance of reading on a daily basis.
