Isha Khan: ‘Young Person of the Year’

Isha Khan was crowned ‘Young Person of the Year’ at a special awards ceremony dedicated to recognising the young people of the borough of Rochdale yesterday evening (Thursday 27 March).

Isha currently volunteers with the police cadets and fund raises for the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research. She also recently helped a family member overcome cancer and was described as “an inspiration to many”. Isha was also presented with the Contribution to the Community award.

The Mayor’s Youth awards saw 16 awards and a number of certificates presented to young people, aged between 11 and 19 in recognition of their achievements and contributions towards their peers and local communities.

Other award winners on the evening were:

  • Best Newcomer – Moahmmed Ali Hussain
  • Personal Achievement – Sophie Hepworth Wrigley
  • Most Committed – Sophie Boal
  • Peer Mentor – Vicky McKeon
  • Leader/Volunteer – Zenab Ali
  • Individual Sporting – Sian Hall
  • Young Carer – Holly Heaviside
  • Contribution to the Community – Isha Khan
  • Long Service Achievement – Kiran Iqbal
  • Nancy Todd Award – Harris Wolfenden
  • Voice of Young People – Chris Marland
  • Group Contribution – Lower Falinge Junior Wardens
  • Group Fundraising – Children’s Council
  • Perfromance Group – Subsit Youth Group. 

A special award was also given to Alisha Sellers for her contribution to youth work in Middleton.

A number of certificates were also handed out to young people who have completed Level Two awards working with young people and Level Two awards for youth work in practice.

Speaking at the awards, Mayor Peter Rush said: “It is my honour to be here. The whole of the borough is represented and these young people really are the future of our town. The foundations have been set and now it is about the young people building up the town.”

It was announced during the awards that young people involved with the Rochdale Youth Service have raised £638.67 for the Mayor's charities, Springhill Hospice, the Rochdale branch of Parkinson’s UK and the Blind Welfare Association.

The event was organised by Rochdale Youth Service along with Rochdale Council.
