Proposal to place Pte Anthony Palmer VC street sign on Heywood Library

The final position for the street sign being used to honour Pte Anthony Palmer VC could be above a window at Heywood Library, subject to listed building consent.
Councillor Alan McCarthy, Lead Member for the Armed Forces at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “Wood Street has been chosen to be re-named in honour of Pte Anthony Palmer V.C. because of its prominent position close to the Memorial Gardens and L/Cpl Stephen Shaw MC Way.
“Subject to listed building consent it is proposed that the position of the sign will be above the library window.”
Private Palmer was honoured by Queen Victoria in 1857 after he saved the life of a senior officer during the Crimean war. He is buried in Heywood Cemetery.
