Introducing The Silver Line:

The Silver Line is a free confidential helpline providing information, friendship and advice to older people, open 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

More than half of all 75 year olds in the UK live alone and one in ten suffers intense loneliness but is reluctant to ask for help. In a poll conducted to mark the national launch of The Silver Line on 25 November 2013, 9 out of 10 older people told researchers that “a chat on the phone” is the most helpful solution when they feel lonely but 1 in 4 older people say they never or seldom have someone to chat to on the phone.

The Silver Line is the confidential, free helpline for older people across the UK open every day and night of the year. The specially trained helpline staff:

  • Offer information, friendship and advice
  • Link callers to local groups and services
  • Offer regular befriending calls
  • Protect and support those who are suffering abuse and neglect

The Silver Line is a helpline for older people. There are no strict age limits but most people that Silverline speak to are over 65. So, if you think it’s for you, it’s for you.
Silver Line can be contacted on 0800 4 70 80 or email: info@thesilverline.org.uk

Crime Prevention tips for the week:

Free Lunch pack for neighbours

The Big Lunch on the first Sunday in June each year is the UK’s annual get together for neighbours. Started by the Eden Project in 2009 and funded by Big Lottery, it is a day when as many neighbours as possible across the UK turn off our TVs and sit down with the people in our streets and communities for a bit of food and a lot of laughter.

You and your neighbours are invited to join the 2014 celebration and you can order your Free Big Lunch pack here: www.thebiglunch.com

Hosting your event is really easy as your Big Lunch can be anything from a few people gathering in your kitchen, garden or garage to a huge street party or community event. Everyone is encouraged to bring something to the table so it doesn’t need to cost much at all. The free pack contains some free materials, seeds and ideas to get you started and a few great competitions too.

We encourage all of our members to join in because The Big Lunch has a natural fit with Neighbourhood and Home Watch’s ethos of meeting our neighbours and building stronger, friendly communities where people feel safe. It’s a great way to connect with new people in the area, share progress and maybe even recruit some new members and if you decide to host yours as a fundraiser – well why not!

Neighbourhood Watch members who already take part annually tell us that even when it’s raining there’s a great sense of solidarity and it can help create stronger community spirit locally. You can read about some of the success stories here:
http://www.thebiglunchers.com/index.php/2013/10/community-success-the-big-lunch/

3.65 million people took part in The Big Lunch in 2013 and in 2012 the Big Jubilee lunch was an official part of the Queens Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The Big Lunch 2014 is on Sunday 1 June, visit The Big Lunch website to get a flavour of what it’s all about and join @thebiglunch on Twitter and Facebook so you don’t miss out on the ideas, information and free stuff too.

To speak to a member of The Big Lunch Team call 0845 850 8181.
