Derek Clutterbuck nominated for a Ramblers President award

Date published: 18 March 2014

Derek Clutterbuck, a member of Rochdale Ramblers, has been nominated for a Ramblers President award by the Rochdale Ramblers group.

Derek, who has been a dedicated rambler for 32 years, has been nominated for the ‘Best Individual Achievement’ award.

Derek was a founding member of the Rochdale Ramblers, which began in 1994. For 18 years, Derek was the group’s footpath secretary, which saw him work closely with Rochdale Council to maintain 342 miles of footpath and 1,782 rights of way.

As part of his previous role Derek also gave evidence at public inquiries, objected to planning applications when appropriate and gave presentations at Rochdale Council meetings.

In 2011, Derek helped to survey the Rochdale Way and produced a report for the council on how the route could be improved for walkers.

At 82 years old, Derek is still incredibly active and is a regular walk leader but his main passion is the maintenance of the footpath network around Rochdale, something he has worked tirelessly to achieve.

The Ramblers President awards, also known as the President Volunteer awards are an opportunity to celebrate and highlight volunteer success and achievement.

Derek received nominations for the individual achievement award from Rochdale Ramblers after they were asked for nominations for the awards.

Now, Derek has been short listed with two other nominees by President of the Ramblers, Kate Ashbrook.

Roy Thorniley, Countryside and Footpath Secretary for the Rochdale Ramblers said: “Derek has supported the aims and objectives of the organisation throughout and his efforts, contributions and achievements are too numerous to mention.

"I am pleased that the President of the Ramblers has included Derek in her shortlist of three for the award.”

Members of the public can now vote for the winner of the award. Voting closes on Friday 21 March with the winner being announced at the Ramblers General Council meeting in Liverpool on Saturday 29 March.
