Ypres, Belgium

On Thursday 27 March, 35 Year 9 and Year 10 students plus 4 staff are going to Langemark, Ypres, Belgium, for three days to commemorate the centenary of World War 1. We will visit numerous exhibitions, museums and cemeteries.

The students will be able to lay a poppy cross at a place of their choosing and at 8:00pm on Friday 28 March, students will lay a wreath at the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate on behalf of all the students and staff of Oulder Hill.

Students need to be at school for 6:30am on the morning of the 27 March and the coach will depart at 7:00. We will return for midnight on Saturday 29 March.

Year 8 Boys Basketball team

Well done to the Year 8 Boys Basketball team who played in a three team tournament against the champions of Bolton (Canon Slade) and the champions of Bury (Derby High School). Oulder Hill beat Derby with ease by 20 points to 10, with baskets coming from Marcus Welsby, Dayne Stewart, Jack Turner and Jordan Parkhill. They then played a very strong Canon Slade team and were beaten by 20 points to 1.

All the boys played exceptionally well and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to play other champion schools. Player of the tournament was Jack Turner who gave 100% in both games and scored some vital points for the team. Players involved were: Marcus Welsby, Jordan Parkhill, Dillan Easton, Dayne Stewart, Matthew Greenwood, Thomas Booth, Babar Rashid, Daniel Madeley and Lewis Midgley.

Year 7 Boys Football team

The Year 7 Boys Football team began their 2014 campaign by losing to Hollingworth 4-0. The team will be taking on Holy Family in the cup quarter final, and we will let you know how they get on.

Trampolining Competition

Well done to the following Year 7 students on their fantastic performance in the Rochdale Schools Trampolining Competition: Abbie Holt, Katie Hicks, Poppy Smyth and Alana Percy. Unfortunately they did not win, but were absolutely awesome, all performing somersaults!

Year 9 Boys Rugby team

The Year 9 Boys Rugby team had an overall successful day at the RFU’s Emerging Schools Competition at Altrincham Kersal Rugby Club with ten schools from across Greater Manchester taking part. The Oulder Hill boys played games against Broadoak, Crompton House, Prestwich, Wellington and Astley.

They won 3 of their games, beating Wellington 4-0, Prestwich 3-1 and Astley. They drew against Broadoak, 4-4 having been 4-1 up at halftime and lost 4-2 to eventual finalists Crompton House 4-2.

Overall, Oulder Hill finished second in their group. Sadly, only the winners went through to the final against the winners of the other group. Star performers were Jonni Allen, Steven Nairn and Harvey Mann with all boys scoring 3 tries each.

The full squad was: Will Moore, Jonni Allen, Harvey Mann, Steven Nairn, Will Armour, Jonny Armour, Kyle Dixon, Brandon Coughlan and Corrigan Jarman Naylor. Well done to all the boys for performing so well and giving a good account of the school on the day.

From Monday to Friday week commencing 24 March Health and Social Care students will be undertaking work experience placements. We hope that the students taking part have a challenging and rewarding time.

The next Parent Forum meeting will be taking place on Tuesday 25 March, starting at 6:00pm. New and existing members are welcome to attend.

Joanna Millan, a Holocaust survivor, will be in school on Tuesday 25 March to talk to Year 9 History students about her experiences. A holocaust educator, Caroline Sifklin, will then do some follow-up sessions with the students. The Mayor and Mayoress will be attending and we are very privileged that this event is taking place.

Our next ‘Drop Everything and Read’ (DEAR) session will be taking place on Wednesday 26 March between 1:30 and 1:55pm. The aim of DEAR is to create a culture of reading for pleasure and to eradicate the stigma attached to reading. Students and staff will be taking part, and they will be encouraged to read from a variety of materials including books, newspapers and magazines.
