Latest REAG clean up

Date published: 17 March 2014

The latest REAG clean up was on Hare Street, Ipswich Street, Maldon Street, Exeter Street and Durham Street.

The edges of the footpath on Maldon Street and Exeter Street were filled with litter and rubbish. The open area between Vine Place, Ashfield Road and Milkstone Road was also filled with litter, which the members of the group cleaned.

Between Exeter Street and Durham Street there is an open area surrounded by high walls, it is also filled with litter and has become a health hazard for the residents. Members of  REAG have asked Rochdale Council Environmental Health to take immediate action as soon as possible.

Sohail Ahmed, Chairman of the Milkstone & Deeplish Area Forum, thanked members of REAG and offered them tea in the Deeplish Community Centre.

REAG also recently cleaned Drake Street, Ann Street and other adjoining streets. They cleaned the open area on Ann Street, which was filled with litter and the road works.

Ghulam Rasul Shahzad OBE, Secretary of REAG, said: "We are asking Rochdale Council to take appropriate immediate action to work with the owners of these open areas, derelict buildings and derelict shops to improve the environment of the Gateway to Rochdale.

"There should be a flower bed in the open area in front of the railway station where the taxi ranks are, with 'Welcome to Rochdale - birthplace of the Co-Operative Movement' and there should be flags of the countries where the Cooperative Bank and utilities are."
