Young women celebrate International Women’s Day at Rochdale Leisure Centre

Date published: 13 March 2014

Around 50 young women celebrated International Women’s Day at Rochdale Leisure Centre on Saturday 8 March, taking part in activities centred on this year’s global theme, ‘Inspiring Change’.

After hearing an inspirational speech from Councillor Shefali Ahmed on how to empower each other and realise their potential, the group created artwork based on their thoughts and feelings about how to make changes in their community and beyond.

Two ideas written on the piece were 'Everyone has the right to free education', by Sharmin and 'Let’s work together to end poverty', by Rufaiza. The artwork will be displayed at the Mayor’s Youth Awards on 27 March.

Councillor Ahmed said: “International Women’s Day is a tradition that dates back to the early 1900s and it’s tremendous to see Rochdale’s young women take such an active role in celebrating the day.”
