Local charity donate equipment abroad

Date published: 12 March 2014

Unused assistive technology and equipment has been donated to the Aaman Foundation, a charity set up in the name of Aaman Majid.

17-year-old Aaman, from Rochdale, who was born with the degenerative condition axonal neuropathy. His family set up the Rochdale based charity after a family holiday where Aaman saw that disabled children in other countries weren’t as privileged as him and didn’t have wheelchairs or other equipment they needed to help them in their everyday life. The Aaman Foundation was set up to give hope and mobility to the less able by sending equipment that is donated to them to those with disabilities in other countries.

Helen Redman, Student Support Manager at Hopwood recently carried out an audit of assistive technology and equipment at the College and found lots of equipment which was out of date. Learning Support Assistant, Marion O’Reilly, suggested donating the old equipment to the Aaman Foundation and it was all officially handed over to the charity at the Student Support Department on the Middleton campus.

Helen Redman commented: “This is a great way to extend support to learners outside of the College and even outside the UK. It shows that everything has a value, and what we deem as worthless can be so useful to others. This now has provided an exciting opportunity for the College to invest in more up-to-date software and equipment to support learners with their studies.”

Majid Nazir, Aaman’s dad and founder of the Aaman Foundation, was thrilled with the donation and said: “This equipment will benefit disabled students in Syria and Pakistan to improve their education.”
