Magic £5
Mr Morgan has started the ‘Magic Fiver’ challenge again during this season of Lent. The First Key stage to be pulled from the tin in assembly was Foundation stage. The challenge is to ‘double the Fiver’ or better. During the week Classes Nightingale and King have made Rice Krispie and cornflake cakes and have sold them in aid of Caritas and CAFOD. We will find out on Friday if they have managed to double the Fiver for charity. A new Key stage will then be pulled out of the tin for the following week.

The children will sing ‘Love is something if you give it away, you end up having more!’

500 Words – National Writing Competition
All the children in Class Crown have been experiencing what it is like to be a real author. Every child in the class has entered the 500 Words writing competition promoted on BBC Radio 2. The children wrote some excellent descriptive stories of no more than 500 words which were then submitted to the national judges. We should find out whether any of our entries have been selected to go to the next round in early April.

Tuesday assembly, 19 March : CAFOD
Next week Mrs Sivills (ex Head teacher from Alice Ingham) will do a presentation for the whole school about the work of CAFOD on the morning of Wednesday 19 March in the school hall. This will be instead of Tuesday assembly.

Tuesday assembly, 25 March : Mothering Sunday
On Tuesday 25 March, Class Teresa will be putting on a special assembly on the theme of Mothering Sunday.

School chaplains
Our Pupil chaplains presented an assembly last Tuesday about Lent.

We would like to thank Mrs Sivills from CAFOD who will be working with the chaplains during Lent and also keeping in touch with the whole school providing information about the work of CAFOD.

We will be closed again on Monday 26 May and return to school on Monday 2 June for summer half term.

Please do not book holidays before or after these dates as they cannot be approved and you may be liable to a fine. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

Media studies at St. Cuthbert’s
Year 5 will be visiting St. Cuthbert’s school for a media lesson on Wednesday 2 April. Transport is arranged and children will be collected from St. John’s at 9am and return in time for lunch at 12.30pm. Please ensure your child is in school on time.

Appointments
Please note that pupils will not be allowed to leave school for appointments unless prior notice is given and proof of appointment is shown.

Emergency contact
It is essential that we have correct contact details for cases of emergency so please ensure that you let the office know if you change your telephone number or address.

Please ensure that you are contactable at all times during school time and keep your phones switched on.

Lost property
Children being children sometimes put things down and forget about them. Unfortunately, it can be a coat, a jumper or another item of value. Please teach your children to be responsible for their own personal items, and should your child arrive home with a coat/jumper that is not theirs, please return it to the school the day after so that it can be returned to its rightful owner.

Clubs
Afterschool and breakfast clubs
The charge for afterschool club and breakfast club is 25p per session. Please ensure that you pay for your sessions at the school office every week.

Homework club
Children must be collected at 4pm promptly.

Attendance and punctuality
Punctuality
Please ensure your child is in school for 8.50am each day. Lateness is very disruptive for the school and you should make every effort to be on time.

Attendance
If your child is absent from school, you must ring the school office on 01706 647195 before 9am to provide a valid reason.

Medicines can be administered in school by our qualified first aid staff and if your child is otherwise well but needs medication, please send them to school with their medicine and complete a consent form at the school office.

Holiday leave
Please do not ask for leave out of normal term time, this will not be granted and will be marked as unauthorised on your child’s register. Please be aware that penalty charges can and will be issued for continued absenteeism and you may lose your place at the school.

School meals
Please keep to your choice of meal (i.e. school meal or packed lunch) for your child and do not keep changing. This causes great disruption to the planning of meals and keeping individual accounts up to date.
