'Greek Night’ in Littleborough!

Date published: 11 March 2014

People came from across the North West to celebrate the 250th 'Greek Night’, hosted by Cafe Demetris, at Littleborough Coach House.

To mark the 250th Greek Night, and in conjunction with the Coach House, a special celebration was held in the newly re-furbished Harvey Room.

Greek Dreams provided the evening’s entertainment and encouraged participation in traditional Greek dancing to the live accompaniment of the Cafe’s resident bouzouki musicians.

Coach House chairman, John Parker, acknowledges the partnership that has grown up between the Cafe and the volunteer-based Heritage Centre within the Coach House over the past seven years that has seen the building return to use seven days a week.

Whilst the Coach House is run entirely by volunteers, the growth of the cafe is providing a source of local employment. This enabled the Coach House in 2012 to purchase the freehold of the building from its original brewery ownership and the evening’s celebration provided one of a number of fund raising opportunities for the Coach House, with proceeds from the event going into the building fund to repay some of the recent expenditure on this listed building’s fabric.

The Cafe’s proprietor, Stewart Demetriades, acknowledged the freedom he has been given to develop a Mediterranean theme in the former mill town’s Heritage Centre, which has enabled the success of these special Greek Nights and whose popularity led the celebration.

Coach House chairman, John Parker said: Here’s to the next 250 Greek Nights and the securing of this community asset through ownership by the volunteer-led charitable trust that has purchased the building outright."

Since taking on the lease of the cafe premises within the Coach House in 2007, Stewart Demetriades and his staff have provided a full time mediterranean themed cafe and catering facility for the centre’s two function rooms. Friday and Saturday evenings have also seen the hosting of ‘Greek Nights’ with themed food and entertainment.
