Number One Riverside honoured at the Civic Trust Awards

Date published: 10 March 2014

Number One Riverside, the council’s office building, customer service centre and library, has been honoured at the Civic Trust Awards, which took place at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool.

The Civic Trust Awards scheme was established in 1959 to recognise the very best in architecture, design, planning, landscape and public art from around the world.

Awards are given to projects which demonstrate high quality architecture and design and are sustainable as well as being accessible to all users.

They also highlight buildings which have made a positive cultural, social or economic contribution to the community.

The judges praised Number One Riverside for making a significant contribution to the quality and appearance of the built environment and providing a positive social, cultural, environmental and economic benefit to the local community.

It’s another accolade for the building, which was named best mixed use development by the Concrete Society last year and was also given the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce Building of the Year award in 2013.

Councillor Peter Williams, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Customer Services at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “We’re really proud of this award because, as a communal building, Number One Riverside really belongs to our residents. It is a critical part of the regeneration of Rochdale town centre and will benefit many generations to come.”

Steve McIntyre, Partner at FaulknerBrowns Architects, who designed the building, said: “We were delighted to win the Civic Trust Commendation which acknowledges the quality of the architecture and civic presence of Number One Riverside.”
