Members of Freehold Community Group celebrated International Women’s Day today (Saturday 8 March) with a community event.

Held at Castlemere Banqueting Hall, the event included a number of stalls and advice points as well as entertainment, face painting, henna art and food.

Holly Stevenson, a volunteer with the community group, said: “Today is about celebrating the work that women have done for years.”

Mohammed Azar, Secretary of Freehold Community Group, said: “We may even see up to 300 people by the end of the day.”

This was the 14th event held by the group to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Mohammed added: “We started celebrating International Women’s Day in 2000.”

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past and present.

“Women play an important part of our community and we wanted them to know that we think they should be at the forefront of things. Even though this is a global event, the message is very simple,” said Mohammed.

Men, women and children attended the event, which also saw Councillor Shafali Ahmed give a talk .

Representatives from Rochdale Boroughwide Housing, the police and social services, the Asian Women’s Project, the Women’s Housing Action Group and Multicultural Arts and Media Centre attended the event to offer help and advice to those in attendance.
