Varying survey results for Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust

The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS trust, which is responsible for Rochdale Infirmary, has shown a varying level of results in the latest staff survey.

Even though some results are encouraging, other results are lower than the national average.

The top five rankings areas for the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust include staff working extra hours, quality and diversity training and staff having hand washing facilities available.

The percentage of staff working extra hours within the Pennine Acute Hospitals Trust is currently at 61%.

The percentage of staff having equality and diversity training in the last 12 months is at 75%, a result which is above the national 2013 average for acute trusts.

The percentage of staff receiving health and safety training in the last twelve months is also higher than the national 2013 average. The average set by acute trusts is currently at 76% with Pennine Acute staff setting a bench mark of 80%.

63% of staff within the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS trust said that they had hand washing materials always available. Again, this score is higher than the national average which is currently at 60%.

Staff experiencing discrimination within the work place over the last 12 months is currently at 9%. This is  better than the national average which is currently at 11%.

The less favourable results are in areas regarding staff recommendation, team work and work improvements. The questions were answered on a scale of 1 to 5 with a higher the result indicating a better score.

Staff recommendation of the trust as a place to work or receive treatment gained a result of 3.35 compared to the national average of 3.68.

Effective team working received a score of 3.64 compared to the national average of 3.74.

The percentage of staff experiencing harassment, bullying or abuse from patients, relatives or the public in the last 12 months was higher than the national average. The Pennine Trust received a result of 32% compared to the national result of 29%.

The percentage of staff able to contribute towards improvements at work scored 64% compared to the national average of 68%.

The final question found the percentage of staff who agreed that their role makes a difference to patients. Pennine Acute scored 89%. The current national average is 91%.

The 2013 NHS staff survey involved 265 NHS organisations in England with the results going on to be used by NHS organisations to help them review and improve staff experience.
