Georgina Maughan wins college cadet award

Date published: 04 March 2014

Student nurse Georgina Maughan, 18, of Broad Lane, Rochdale was presented with a Multi-Professional Cadet Award at the recent Oldham College Annual Awards Evening.

Having completed the Nursing Cadet Scheme, Georgina is now on a three year adult nursing Bsc Hons course at Salford University and is working on placement at Rochdale Infirmary in Day Surgery.

Last August, as a member of the Cadet Scheme run by Skills for Health NW, Georgina joined eight other trainee doctors, nurses and dentists from Greater Manchester who visited the small town of Jinja in Uganda. During the ten days visit the group promoted good health and shared advice on best practice with hospitals, orphanages, schools and clinics in the area.

Georgina said: “It was an opportunity of a lifetime.

"The local people were so friendly, welcoming and really happy to see us. The schools were very basic, the classrooms little more than sheds, but all the children showed a strong willingness to learn general hygiene and living skills.”

Georgina raised over £1,200 to self-fund the Uganda trip and says she was "overwhelmed" by the wonderful support received from her family, friends and the local community, including groups such as the Rochdale Freemasons and Rotary Clubs. She described the overall adventure as “an amazing experience” for use in her future career as a nurse.
