Work on stone flags for Heywood War Memorial
Date published: 02 March 2014
Work on stone flags to be placed at Heywood War memorial is almost complete. Currently three out of four flags are built and ready for painting.
Heywood stonemason Harry Simpson has undertaken the work on the flags which will depict the Union Flag, the White Ensign, the Blue Ensign and the Red Ensign.
The decision to go ahead with the stone flags was made by Heywood Township Committee members after consultation with veterans decided that any World War One commemoration plans would be a solemn reflection of remembrance rather than a celebration.
The flags are being installed at the memorial as a way to commemorate and acknowledge all those who played a part in the Armed Forces as well as those who have served with the forces.
Designs and inscriptions for the memorial were delegated to the Heywood Memorial Committee, which comprised of Council Lead Member for the Armed Forces, Councillor Alan McCarthy, Lancashire Veterans Association Chairman, Harry Mills and SAAFA representative, Norma Langford.
The designs and inscriptions were then submitted to the Heywood Township Committee were they gained approval.
