Rochdale Company of Archers awarded £500 grant

Date published: 25 February 2014

The Rochdale Company of Archers has been awarded a grant of £500 from the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust.

The trust has been working with young people from Rochdale who are not in education, employment or training to help them get their lives on track. As part of the programme, the young people were responsible for allocating the £500 grant to a local sports club.

Athlete Charlotte Hartley, who was a mentor to those involved in the scheme, said: “We decided on the Rochdale Company of Archers because when we were with them we had such a good time and thought that they would benefit from the money the most.”

Brian Woodcock, Chairman of Rochdale Company of Archers, said: “To say that receiving this grant is an honour would be an understatement. We try hard to promote this sport within the community and to be recognised for it is superb.”

The money will now be used to fund new archery equipment for the club.

Brian added: “We go out to schools a lot and do sessions with the schools. Over three years we have provided sessions to around 5,000 school children so that is our community side of the club. I imagine a lot of the grant will go towards equipment for those sessions.”

The Dame Kelly Holmes Trust uses a range of personal development programmes to help disadvantaged young people by providing mentoring and support from world-class athletes.
