'Creatures of the Deep' make a splash at Touchstones

Date published: 25 February 2014

Touchstones Rochdale’s latest family fun day ‘Creatures of the Deep’ drew lots of happy families with over 900 visitors in just three hours.

The vast array of activities definitely made a splash from Fabulous Fish Paper Cup Puppets to Mermaid Peg Dolls and Swimming Scuba Divers to Knitted Nemos.

Visitors certainly made the most of the variety of arts and crafts activities on offer, with all the activity stations constantly full to capacity. Karen Vine, Education Co-ordinator for the Arts & Heritage Service, said: "We pride ourselves on putting on exciting activities providing families with an opportunity to have fun learning together. Families certainly came out in force for our latest event and as they say, a great time was had by all.”

The success of the event was made possible with the help of Touchstones Rochdale’s partner organisations including the Family Learning Service and the RSPB, plus all their volunteers, artists and staff who delivered sea-themed activities to ‘whet’ the appetite of their visitors.

Visitors Sarah and Fiona Stapleton said they enjoyed all the “creative activities” on offer. Heather and Ryan Rothwell enjoyed making the knitted Nemo best of all and said of their experience: “It was a really good day.” Emma Lord added: “It was very well organised and all staff and volunteers were all lovely and helpful.”

Speaking about the day, the Head of Arts and Heritage, Julian Jefferson said: “Touchstones was absolutely awash with visitors. We are delighted with the success of the event which provided families with the opportunity to participate in fantastic arts and crafts activities in a fun museum and gallery environment. For those who have missed out - don’t worry because during Easter and the Summer Holidays we have even more activities for families to enjoy."
