Restaurant Review: Clough Manor

Date published: 25 February 2014

Settling on the edge of the Pennines, just outside of Newhey, in lovely Denshaw is Clough Manor. Only ten minutes by car from Rochdale, this charming country hotel has been feeding Rochdale and Saddleworth residents and accommodating the area’s visitors for many years.

New owners Siobhan and Mark have invested heavily in the hotel’s restaurant by employing two of the area’s best chefs and sourcing the highest quality, locally produced ingredients. They recently launched a grill menu with a selection of the finest steaks available from £10.95, including T-bone and Chateaubriand. The hand-made ground beef Clough burger is like something you would find in a gourmet burger bar and is a bargain at £5.95. For the less carnivorous there is a selection of fish dishes and salads. For vegetarians there is a stunning grilled haloumi sandwich, with roads red pepper, baby leaf spinach and humus in a ciabatta roll.

We visited for Sunday lunch and had the two course menu for just £9.95. Each week there are main courses of roast beef, lamb and chicken, served with proper gravy, home-made Yorkshire puddings and seasonal vegetables. There is also a choice of Sunday specials, including the local favourite steak and ale rag pudding.

After a nice glass of chilled white wine in the bar, we were escorted through to the panoramic restaurant. We had turkey wellington, a delicious crown of turkey, wrapped in stuffing and sausage meat, with a layer of bacon, covered in flaky pastry. For desert I had a crème brule, my colleague had a hearty bowl of rhubarb crumble with cream and custard.

‘The Clough’, as it is fondly known, is famous for its stunning views over rolling Saddleworth and is a popular venue for weddings. Its many function rooms can cater for a wide range of events from bespoke celebration dinners to business meetings. On 22 March they are organising music and dance Broadway Spectacular, which includes four course meal and entertainment for £39 per person.

We love this place. Ask for a table near the window to get the best views.
