Seven names added to Heywood War Memorial
Date published: 19 February 2014
Seven new names have been added to Heywood’s First World War Memorial: W Parkinson, J McIntyre, B C Butterworth, E Collinge, H Armstrong, J Thornley and H Olden.
All seven men, who fought in World War 1, had connections to Heywood. The men were all honoured at a military service which coincided with the 40th anniversary of the M62 coach bombing.
The dedication of the names was organised by the Lancashire Veterans Association. The men’s connections to Heywood were only recently revealed after relatives began researching their family trees.
At the dedication afternoon, tributes were also paid to Fusiliers Lee Rigby and David Lee Collins. Fusilier Rigby was killed last year and Fusilier Collins was stabbed outside of a nightclub in Ayina Napa in November 2012.
A remembrance service was also held for Lance Corporal Michael Beswick who died in service 21 years ago.
