Faizah Faruque spends her £200 competition winnings in Rochdale Town Centre

Date published: 17 February 2014

Faizah Faruque, a full time college student, won £200 to spend in Rochdale Town Centre and today (Monday 17 February) collected and spent her winnings.

Faizah spent the winnings on other people instead of buying things for herself. She said: “I am not the type of person to spend money on myself so I thought I would spend it on people around me. The people I have bought things for mean the most to me so I just wanted to put a smile on their faces.”

The £200 was spent in a number of shops including Boots, Superdrug, New Look, Peacocks and International.

Faizah’s gifts included perfumes, aftershave, make up, slippers, a bag and a scarf.

The gifts are now to be given to Faizah’s mum, sister and the friend who helped her write the winning entry. “My mum always buys me things so it is nice to be able to give something back to her,” added Faizah.

Faizah didn’t expect to win the competition after sending in her entry. She said: “Once we got into it and started writing, it was nice to discover the diversity of Rochdale and how dynamic Rochdale really is.”

The competition, organised by Rochdale Online and Rochdale Town Centre Management, was aimed at encouraging people to see the diversity in Rochdale Town Centre. Entrants had to write an advert for the town centre (in less than 200 words).

Faizah’s winning entry

Rochdale; a thriving, urban, yet historic town, based in the heart of Greater Manchester. The large variety of culture and diversity in the town centre, combined with the range of personalities and great service from the people you’ll meet, emphasises the dynamics of Rochdale.

From the minute you step off the bus in the new transport interchange, you’ll be dazzled - not only by the fact that the interchange lies on Europe’s widest bridge, (which hides one of the lost treasures of Rochdale; an ancient bridge dating back to the 13th century) but also by the incredible structural designs that surround you.

The modern vibe emitted by the state of the art building (used as the town’s library), contrasts with the vintage yet beautiful architecture of the historic Town Hall. Minutes away stands the architecturally stunning building that houses Rochdale Sixth Form College; currently the best in the country.

For a fine wine and dining experience, visit the Baum, voted the best pub in Britain. Beside it, you’ll find the Co-op museum, the birthplace of the internationally renowned Co-operative movement.

Afterwards, indulge in the retail environment of Rochdale Town Centre.

Rochdale and its residents are prospering, academically, economically, and socially.
