Whole School Winter Olympics Day
We will be celebrating our own whole school Winter Olympics day this week and final details are now being made. Our day includes an inspirational input by John Willis, who has certainly overcome his own barriers to achievement. John will be speaking to all the staff and students at the start of the day at the Gracie Fields Theatre. Students are allowed to come to school in their sports tracksuits etc to take part in the many activities planned.

Year 11 Parents Consultation Evening
Parent / Carers will have received information relating to the Year 11 Parents Evening session which is to be held on Tuesday 25 February.

Holiday Club Programme – half term
All parents / carers will know the arrangements for the half term club which takes place next week. A total of 94 youngsters are registered for the various club activities which I am sure will be great fun! Also thanks to the club co-ordinators and staff for their support without which it would not happen.

Congratulations!
Well done to Kallum in KS4 for his latest achievements at his trampoline competition held in Wigan – a gold and silver medal award.

Also well done to Joshua, who through his Internship Programme, has been offered a position with a local company! A fantastic achievement and both youngsters are great ambassadors for Redwood School.

After School, Youth Clubs provision
Thank you to parents / carers for your support for the extended schools provision. Last week we reached the great total of 100 attendees at the 13 clubs after school clubs. A reminder that the After School Clubs (3.15pm every night except Tuesday) and Youth Clubs programme (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings 6pm – 8pm and Saturday morning 10am) take place each week.

KS3
Year 7 Red spent Monday morning doing some washing the old fashioned way, using equipment they borrowed from Touchstones Museum in Rochdale: using dolly tubs, sticks and washboards. In the afternoon the group spent time with Officer Patterson who gave his time to deliver a session involving road safety and look around his police car.

Year 8C are enjoying their reflection time as an opportunity to listen and contemplate music before the afternoon starts.

The pupils in the lilac room have been learning about Chinese New Year and tasted some Chinese food.

After school craft club enjoyed a lovely carvery meal at Sandbrook Park. All pupils ate a massive plate full and ice-cream to follow.

Some Key Stage 3 pupils represented Redwood along with some KS4 pupils at a rowing event in Wigan. They came back with a Silver and Bronze medal; Abdullah received the Bronze for KS3.

A teaching assistant and 2 pupils from Oulder Hill join Mr Jacksons Numeracy and Literacy lessons on a Friday mornings, last week they learned about patterns and sequencing using fruit to make fruit kebabs.


Matthew and Leah went to ASDA, Matthew bought the bread for his tutor group’s toast and Leah bought some sweets for her journey to Scotland. They were very independent; they paid themselves and waited for their change.

Student Quote from Robert: “yesterday Mrs Wilson got beat by a 12 year old, that 12 year old was called Robert Holmes. She challenged the master Lego builder to make a house and a boat. After Ryan voted for Robert Mrs Wilson’s model broke and Robert broke down laughing. Robert won a Twix and Mrs Wilson won a tissue to wipe her tears”.

KS4
Students have been reproducing their own designs in plastic.

In their final session the Friday craft group have lovingly made their Chocolate Owl Gift Bags for someone special. Mrs Ward would like to say a big ‘WELL DONE’ to all the students that have taken part this half term and that she is looking forward to new Friday group after half term.

Each morning this week 4U are making a Sochi themed craft, activities started with Individual Snowboarders for our Winter Olympics display. Other activities include designing a Sochi ’Patchwork’ branded T shirt, Olympic medals and event symbols in the Sochi style.

4M went on a trip to the post office. They travelled there independently and then posted some post cards that they had bought.

This term SEB have been finding out about the country of Russia. In our wheelchair dancing we have been beautiful and elegant Swans from Tchaikovsky’s swan lake ballet. We made props to support our dance using feathers, glitter and material.
The Bridging Year had a go on the Folk Lift Truck Simulator at MANTRA Training Centre. A HUGE congratulations to Ben who completed the full course which has never even been achieved by any of the employees.

KS5
6th Form’s Internship group based at Rochdale Infirmary are continuing to work really hard on their programme. Follow the students as the work at their 2nd placement and share in their experiences.

Intern Name: Sophie W

2nd Rotation placement: The Pharmacy based in the Out Patients Dept. at Rochdale Infirmary
Job role: My duties consist of unpacking the medicine boxes and checking them against the inventory list.
Intern Comment: “I really like working in the Pharmacy. I really enjoy unpacking the orders and labelling the medicine bottles and I get on very well with the staff, they are all really nice”
Colleague Comment: “Sophie works really hard and she always completes the tasks which I give her." She is an excellent addition to the team”.

In Performing Arts, Sheraz, Paul, Ismah, Sandra, Mark, Adil, and Raymond performed their Harry Potter scenes without a script. The artistic group have been practising for the past few weeks and finally managed to act out the scene without help. Hannah, tutor said “they have performed phenomenally well, I am very proud of their progress”.
On Wednesday Joanne’s Office Practice group helped Saj and Michele switch offices. Anees, Thomas S, Ismah and Fahad put their office practice skills to good use and helped file away folders, remove clutter and set up computers and printers. The group worked really hard even working through their break time to make sure the switch was smooth. A big thank you to the group.

Julie’s Enterprise group on Wednesday morning helped make chocolate heart shaped biscuits to sell. The group then ran a small sale in the afternoon and made a small fortune. Julie said everyone worked really hard and had a thoroughly good time at the sale.

Students took part in our special Valentine’s Day themed buffet and disco. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Don’t forget we break up tomorrow at 3pm for Half Term and school will re-open to students at 8:45am on Monday 24 February. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday.
The Student of the week this week is Abbey, she is always the first to offer help if you need it. She is polite, enthusiastic and is doing really well in reading for leisure.

Most Improved Student of the week is Sandra. Sandra has shown improvement in her social skills. She is helpful and has been supportive towards her friends.
