A teenager fought off two thieves who tried to steal his mobile phone.

The 14-year-old boy was walking along Holland Street, Falinge, when he heard someone shout: 'Have you got the time?'

The boy turned around to see two men approach and again ask him for the time.

He ignored them and began to walk off but one ran towards him and elbowed him in the face, while demanding he hand over his mobile phone.

As the offender tried to put him in a headlock the boy managed to fend him off and run away.

The incident ocuured at about 4.30pm on 4 February 2014.

One offender is described as Asian, 18 or 19 years old, 5ft 9in tall, of medium build and with stubble.

The second offender was Asian, shorter than his accomplice but about the same age.

Both offenders were wearing black jackets.

Pc Dave Harrison, said: "This boy has shown incredible tenacity when confronted by these two men and despite being elbowed in the face has managed to fend them off and run away.

"The offenders were clearly intent on trying to rob him and I would urge anyone who saw what happened or who has information about who they are to contact us.

"Falinge Park school is nearby and I would also like to make pupils and parents aware of what happened and urge them to be vigilant.

"The boy had been on his phone moments before the attempted robbery so I want to remind people to follow a few simple safety tips to avoid being targeted as the young boy was in this case.

"If you are on your way to or from school, especially if you are on your own, please do not flash any valuables, such as smart phones."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 8424, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
