Poppy wreaths at Cenotaph scattered

Date published: 06 February 2014

Yesterday (5 February) Poppy wreaths at Cenotaph were found to be scattered all over the path at the Memorial Gardens.

The lady who found them was walking through the Memorial Gardens and thought at first it was vandalism, but when she got nearer realised it was the weather that had caused the wreaths to be blown all over the paths.

“I was surprised to see the wreaths all over the paths, and realised it was probably the wind that had caused it.

“What amazed me most was that the wreaths were still there from November.

"Rochdale gets a lot of bad press, but no one had messed with them after all those months.”

A spokesperson for Rochdale Borough Council said: “Our staff carry out checks around the Memorial Garden at least twice each day. We are unsure what caused the wreaths to be scattered around the Cenotaph but it may be due to the wet and windy conditions.

"The area has now been cleared and we have put back the undamaged wreaths and removed any damaged ones.

"We would like to say thank you to the member of the public who raised this and would encourage others to report future issues to our helpline on 0845 226 1800 or via email at environmental.management@rochdale.gov.uk
