Fire at Sahara Grill
Date published: 04 February 2014
A fire has broken out at Sahara Grill on Yorkshire Street near Rochdale Town Centre today (Tuesday 4 February).
Police and fire crews are currently at the scene and it is understood that an aerial unit is being used to contain the fire. Fire fighters also had to use breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze from inside.
The fire was started accidentally and was caused by the grill range of the cooking area.
The fire then spread to the roof, which suffered severe damage. Smoke and water damage has also been caused to the rest of the building.
Onlooker’s said that the fire has been contained but it looks like the building has suffered severe damage. The building has been described as completely black with half of the roof missing.
It is understood that at the time of the incident, staff from the restaurant were inside but escaped uninjured and were out of the building by the time the fire fighters arrived.
Traffic in the surrounding area is only being let through one vehicle at a time so drivers are being advised to avoid the area. The incident is affecting traffic on Yorkshire Street to Halifax Road and Regent Street.
