Our outstanding Nursery is filled to capacity with thriving children

Our Nursery welcomes all the new children who have settled in really well. We are now full, apart from one afternoon. We are already filling up for September 2014 and you are advised to apply if you haven't already done so. The Early Years breakfast and after school clubs are very popular with our working parents who love the flexible hours. The children really enjoy hot dinners cooked freshly in school and served to the children in the Nursery.

The children have started to look at the role of emergency services this term and we already have some budding fire-fighters and police officers. If you have any items relating to ‘people who help us’ or ‘superheroes’, that you no longer need, we would be very pleased to give them a new home.

Hardworking pupils on target for success

40 parents from all year groups came on the 22 January to our workshop. They heard that our termly target tracking system is working well. Termly progress meetings show that the vast majority of children are on track to make or exceed their targets. Detailed information, including levels, will be given to all parents on parents evenings 10/11 February.

Topics to inspire!

Year 6 are going to be studying ‘Time Travel’ for their next topic, alongside their SATS preparation. We will be studying a period of history and then look to the future.

Reception would like to thank parents for sending so much ‘junk’ for our modelling projects. We are now collecting old paint brushes (clean ones, all sizes welcome, we don’t mind if they’re too fluffy to paint with!)

Doris, as always, says ‘thank you’ for your food and hay donations. She had a lovely time at with Amelia and Finley. Thank you very much for your support. They are out and about soon on their trips and letters have gone out.

Year 1 is enjoying ‘Splat Take that about the Circus and also traditional tales.

Year 2 is learning, ‘All around the world’, which includes Littleborough of course.

Year 3’s unit of study this term is Puppets. Some children have brought puppets from home to share with us. If you have a puppet at home and are happy for us to look at it, please send it in. We promise to look after them and deliver them back at the end of our unit. Thank you in advance.

Year 4 have been looking at the Titanic and Natural disasters. Year 5 have been studying Greeks, past and present.

On Thursday 3 April, all parents are invited in to take part in your child’s learning, as well as your invitation to come in on Parents Evenings on 10 and 11 February.
You can see exactly what your child is studying this term on the school website under Classes on the bar at the top. Then choose Curriculum and you will see everything they are learning.

Reading

All children are benefitting from guided group reading sessions as well as reading individually. The online Accelerated reading programme is already such a success we are discussing expanding it across school. 20 children are also on the Better Reading Programme. We LOVE to read!

Writing challenge winners transform playground!

The high standard of writing from the children meant that picking 2 winners from each class was difficult! 28 winners have now received a great prize from our fantastic PTFA. Their wonderful donation of £2000 will now be spent on the children's suggestions for exciting, safe and enjoyable additions to the playground.

Pupil numbers a record high!

The recent census showed that our numbers are continuing to rise. There are currently 437 children and many year groups are full with waiting lists. Parents are attracted by our calm, purposeful environment and by the confidence and enthusiasm of the children. The entrance has benefited from a welcoming display of reasons why children love our school.

Profile of the month

Every month we will shine a spotlight on a special person in school. This month it is our wonderful Catering Supervisor, Bronwyn Jackson, who manages our kitchen. She has been at Littleborough CPS for 18 years, arriving in May 1996.

In 2008 she was seconded to a management position for 2 years and then returned in September 2010. Bronwyn and her team work hard every day, to a very high standard of hygiene. They provide over 1300 healthy, tasty meals a week to Government standards, which the children and staff really enjoy. They are always looking forward and the recent addition of hot Nursery lunches has been very popular.

Bronwyn says: "Thank you to all the children who have a school lunch. We hope even more take up the meals. Look out for the special theme days."

Thank you to Bronwyn and her team!

Enrichment programme

We have now published our impressive enrichment programme. Here is a flavour of some of the activities;

  • Netball club continues to be very popular and great fun! Two teams will be selected within the next couple of weeks and letters will be sent home. The netball league games will begin in February. Thank you for your continued support.
  • Judo Breakfast club proved to be very popular with many children in school, therefore new letters will go out next week to any children who did not get a place time. The next set of sessions will start on Thursday 25 Feb.
  • Next half term we are to organise both a cheerleading (Y3-6 girls) and archery club (Y5/6). Details to follow.
  • Last Wednesday our ‘A’ Football Team took part in a ‘One Goal Tournament’ in the Rochdale Division. They played against six other school and only lost one game winning all others to win the tournament overall. They are now through to the regional finals, both date and time to be arranged. What a fantastic result. Obviously ‘A’ team’s recent visit to watch an evening match at Old Trafford has given them all the techniques needed to succeed in the tournament!
  • Rugby is proving a great success as muddy, red cheeked, laughing childr en spill into school after their exciting club once a week!
