Wood Street in Heywood to be renamed after VC hero

Date published: 30 January 2014

Wood Street in Heywood has been chosen as the road that will be re-named after Victorian Cross hero, Anthony Palmer.

Buried in Heywood Cemetery, Private Palmer was honoured by Queen Victoria in 1857 after he saved the life of a senior officer during the Crimean War.

Councillor Alan McCarthy, Lead Member for the Armed Forces at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “Subject to consultation the council has decided on the pedestrianised former Wood Street, which runs between The Phoenix Centre and The Civic Centre, to be re-named in
honour of Pte Anthony Palmer V.C. This location was chosen as it is in a prominent place and is close to the Memorial Gardens and L/Cpl Stephen Shaw MC Way.

“We are seeking people’s views and anyone with a comment should contact Tracey Knight at Heywood Township Office."
