Many thanks to the Year 5 and 6 students of Belfield Community Primary School who joined us for our Victorian Melodrama Workshop this week. Students learnt about the acting styles common to the nineteenth century and stock characters. Well done to everyone involved for such impressive work and thanks to Mr Mvula for leading the sessions.

Staff from primary schools joined us this week for our INSET titled ‘How to Stage a School Production’. The two hour session covered all aspects of stage production and encouraged staff to think creatively about lighting, sound and staging elements. Thanks to Mr Wilcock , Mr Ahmed and Mr De Courcey for leading the session.

Auditions for our forthcoming productions, ‘See See TV’ and ‘Boy Soldiers’ have taken place this week. The auditions were open to all years. If you missed the sessions which took place at lunchtime on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, then please contact Mr De Courcey no later than end of day Tuesday 4 February 2014.

This week sees lunchtime workshops for students of all years to help created animated poems based on material and sources from World War 1. The sessions will take place in G3 and will allow learners to create material that will be turned into computer animations for presentation at the Imperial War Museum.

Friday 31 January sees the close of our recent Music Key Words competition. Entry forms should have been handed to Ms Williams or Mr Lancaster and three winners will be drawn from a box filled with all the correctly completed entries. Each of the three winners will receive a certificate and great prize. The winners will be announced this week.

Pupils are now in receipt of our second edition of ‘Create & Participate’, our Arts e-newsletter. The document offers learners the opportunity to find out what clubs and activities are coming up in the next few weeks in the arts. For more details or a copy, please email Mr De Courcey.

Well done to all the students who attended our ‘Make A Greek Theatre Mask’ workshop last week. Learners were able to make a mask from a traditional Greek tragedy and construct it using paper collage and mosaic. Examples of the work created in the session can be seen on our school website.

Well done to our ‘Company Class’ Dance group who will be representing Rochdale in a Dance event at The Lowry, Salford Quays in March. Our students will be performing several dances based around events during World War I. For more details about the event, please contact Ms Wystawnoha.

Our Year 10 students who are participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme are shortly beginning their practical skills sessions in school. This week started with Map and Compass Skills and next week they will be learning Bearings. They must attend these sessions either on Wednesdays after school or Fridays each week. It is necessary that they bring a coat to school and a change of footwear for their sessions next week. Please could parents also advise their children to keep any evidence they need for their award uploaded on the eDofE.

The Design and Technology Department at school are opening their doors at lunch time every Wednesday. We are aiming to create opportunities for pupils to be able to spend extra time on their technology projects, therefore we would like to offer our facilities for pupils in both key stages. It is a proven fact that going the extra mile in the subject will help improve marks, so why not give it a go and join us at lunchtime. Please see Mr Wadhia for more information.

Lunchtime menus have now changed and tutors have been given copies to share with learners in tutor time. A wide choice of food is available from our different eateries. For more details, please contact Ms Wood or Ms Baron.

The school photographer will be in school this week, taking photographs of selected learners. Learners will be notified of times in classes. For more details, please contact Ms Baron or Ms Casey.

The latest edition of our termly Arts magazine, ‘Create!’ will be available online at our school website this week. The 16 page magazine is full of projects and curriculum information for the Creative, Expressive and Performing Arts. Paper copies are sent to friends of the school and are available from the CEPA Office (N.026).
