Smithy Bridge Station subway cleaned up

Date published: 28 January 2014

Smithy Bridge Station subway has been cleaned up after it was described as being in a “parlous state” by members of rail group STORM (Support The Oldham Rochdale Manchester line).

The Council’s Highways Maintenance Department was approached by STORM to help clear the subway as it is understood that with the closure of level crossings, the subway will be used more.

The work was then undertaken by the Environmental Management Team and involved clearing away leaves, mould, mud and even broken glass before a Drainage Maintenance jetting team cleared all of the drains.

When members of STORM revisited the site, they were pleased with the results after the council's thorough clean up.

A spokesperson for STORM said: “The result was a pleasure to see, that impression being enhanced by observing people being able to use the facility freely without picking their way cautiously through the mess.

"RMBC Highways Maintenance has the praise and gratitude of STORM for the efficient and speedy attention it has given to this problem.”

A spokesperson for Rochdale Council said: “Street cleaners have carried out work to Smithy Bridge subway - including clearing leaves, broken glass and a muddy puddle - to coincide with the closure to traffic and pedestrians of the level crossing.”
