Kate Collins wins M6 Theatre Company monologue writing competition

Date published: 23 January 2014

Kate Collins, 15, has won the M6 Theatre Company Act Now! monologue writing competition. Kate impressed the judges with her piece In Real Life.

Kate will receive £250 and the monologue will be published by Playdead Press Ltd in an anthology of work previously performed professionally by M6 Theatre Company. The piece will also be performed at M6 Studio and Rochdale Library as part of Celebrate! M6’s Youth Arts Festival on 7 and 8 April.

This new writing competition was set up to find an interesting and relevant monologue from a North West based writer aged 26 or under. A panel of industry professionals and young people selected the winning entry from a very strong field.

Kate, who is currently studying for her GCSEs, said: “I’m a 15 year old girl who likes to listen to people talk. I think some of the best dialogues are the ones you overhear on the bus.

"My dad and I sometimes play a game where we make up stories about the people we see, and I am often happily surprised by the characters to be found in everyday life.

"At the moment I’m doing a Young Writers’ course as a member of the Royal Exchange Theatre’s Young Company in Manchester. It’s been brilliant and has given me an opportunity to stretch my writing muscle and talk to people who write for a living.”
