Wardle bands win prizes at the National Open Brass Band Festival 2014

Date published: 22 January 2014

Wardle Academy’s Junior Band and Youth Band took part in the Butlin’s Mineworkers’ National Open Brass Band Festival last weekend (Friday 17th January – Monday 20th January). The festival is a hugely popular event and attracts Brass Bands from all over the UK and both bands won prizes.

The Junior Band, conducted by Gwen Smith, played in the Ensemble Section. They performed a varied programme including Singing in the Rain and Amazing Grace, the latter of which earned Rachael Clegg the Brian Jones Memorial Prize for Best Soloist. Brian Jones, originally from Littleborough, died whilst attending the festival in 2012. It is fitting that the prize has come back to the local area.

The festival was adjudicated by Alan Fernie who made some great comments about the Junior Band. He said: "Excellent work from all kids and teachers. This is lovely stuff, good use of colour and instrumental blend. Excellent."

The Youth Band, conducted by Lee Rigg, performed in the Youth Section. They played a varied programme including Old 100th, Fill the World with Music and MacArthur Park. Laura Conway’s solo in Macushla prompted positive praise from Alan Fernie who said: "Beautifully, lyrically played."

The Youth Band achieved second place at the festival. Alan Fernie commented: "What a great band. Such good sounds and an exciting and involving programme. Well done all."

The band was awarded The George Rowell Memorial Trophy for their achievement.

Wardle has a strong tradition in the performing arts, but particularly in brass band music. They provide instrumental teaching for every pupil who wants it. The school has several groups and bands and they also support local primary schools.

As part of the festival, students got to spend the weekend at the resort, and had the opportunity to listen to other bands performing in different sections of the festival.
