Littleborough grassroots community group receives funding for town events

Date published: 21 January 2014

Littleborough Events and Association Forum (LEAF), is celebrating this week after discovering they are one of Skipton Building Society’s ‘Big 160, securing a slot as a winner in its Grassroots Giving initiative after winning the hearts and minds of the public and triumphing over nearly 1,000 other applicants across the country.

After being shortlisted in the campaign by the UK’s fourth largest building society, the group’s application was then in the hands of the public vote, to determine if they were to win £500 in funding.

The Littleborough Events and Association Forum’s story was shared nationally, as well as via Skipton’s social media activity - as a result the local group secured a big enough proportion of the 20,000 votes received to be crowned a winner.

Stephen Lister, chairman of the group said: “We want to continue contributing to the social and cultural life in the town. Littleborough is recognised as being a tourist centre, we want to enhance this status and let it continue into the future. We’re thrilled we’ve received this funding. It’s causes like this which mean we can carry on doing what we do.”

Littleborough Events and Association Forum is a community group that was set up 4 years ago by 15 volunteers. The forum combines several community groups in the area to organise events and projects much more effectively than by themselves. Combining their skills, knowledge and expertise, the group are responsible for most of the events in the area, such as the Christmas light switch on, the Pennine Proms, and the Littleborough Rushbearing Festival.

Skipton Building Society launched its Grassroots Giving programme as part of its 160th anniversary celebrations earlier this year.
