Work to make Albert Royds Street safer starts

Date published: 20 January 2014

Work has started on Albert Royds Street to to widen the road near its junction with the Halifax Road roundabout.

The local community has campaigned for years for the work due to the danger narrow lanes present to motorists and pedestrians.

Parked cars have been damaged by vehicles passing too close and too fast. Residents say it is also dangerous for drivers getting out of their parked cars.

Local community campaigner John Blundell said: “I’m glad the council has now started the work to make this road safer. It is a two lane duel carriageway approaching the roundabout, and the lanes are far too narrow. Lots of cars have been damaged and I fear for the safety of both motorists and pedestrians. Once the road has been widened, Albert Royds Street will be much safer.”

Councillor Aftab Hussain, who has supported the campaign to make the road safer, added: “There are lots of houses that face onto Albert Royds Street on this section of the road. A layby was provided many years ago as local residents have nowhere else to park. But they have to step out into a very fast road when they park up which is really dangerous. Their vehicles are also being damaged by passing cars almost every day because the lanes are too narrow. These improvements are very welcome and will make this stretch of road much safer for everyone.”
