Drake Street taxi trial for assessment

Date published: 14 January 2014

Rochdale Borough Council has clarified the position regarding allowing public hire taxis to travel up Drake Street for a trial period.

Mark Widdup, Director of Economy and Environment at Rochdale Borough Council, has explained the trial will allow an assessemnt to take place: “We are planning to allow hackney carriages to travel up Drake Street for a trial period following representations from the trade.

"The next step will see us submit a report to cabinet seeking approval to introduce an experimental order, which, if approved, will allow us to start statutory consultation.

"The whole process will take some time and it is important that the trial does not start before the Metrolink extends to the town centre in spring. Only then can we properly assess whether it is feasible to allow hackney carriages to travel up Drake Street in the longer term.”
