‘The Usual View’ painted in an unusual way

Date published: 10 January 2014

A local woman who has competitively sailed the seven seas is exhibiting her paintings at Hollingworth Lake Visitor Centre until Sunday 9 February.

The exhibition called 'The Usual View' is by the well-travelled, local artist Fiona Armer. The astonishing feat of sailing around the world has inspired her work, she said: “It took a round the world yacht race for me to find the courage to start painting and exhibiting my work!”

Her unusual technique of using a knife instead of a brush leads to a very free and textured style, which has meant that three of her sailing action paintings have been shortlisted for the 2013 Royal Society of Marine Artists Open Exhibition.

Fiona has a studio at the historic Wainsgate Chapel, high on the edge of the moors above Hebden Bridge. She has a love of the outdoors, freedom and adventure which she tries to encapsulate in each of her paintings.
