MT Heads MCC Bikers have raised £1,100 for North West Blood Bikes by hosting a 'virtual rally on the moon'.

Julie Cliffe, a member of MT Heads, said: “It hadn’t been done before so we thought we would try something different.”

The group, who fund raise for many causes throughout the year, held the week long rally between Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

The rally included parties on the moon, people dressing as astronauts and one man camping out in his garden for the week. To raise the money, the group asked people to pay £5 for a patch on the moon.

The bulk of the money raised came from the rally but a party was also held on New Year's Eve which brought in more funds.

“We did some raffles and my husband had his beard shaved. He has been growing it for some time so we shaved it and raised another £250,” said Julie.

Money raised from the events will be donated to North West Blood Bikes. MT Heads presented them with a cheque for the final amount on Monday 6 January.

Blood Bikes is an emergency volunteer service which provides out of hours transportation of urgent medical supplies such as whole blood and blood products, samples, results, scans, medication and equipment to any NHS establishment within the North West.

Julie added: “We know some of the guys who volunteer with the service and we think it is a fantastic service. It is a service that any one of us could need.”

The group is pleased with the amount raised and are “over the moon” with the success of their first ever 'virtual rally': “It went a lot better than we expected. We didn’t know if people would fully understand it but they did and it was great,” said Julie.

After the success of this year's rally, MT Heads hope to make it an annual event. Julie added: “We have had a lot of people say to us that they enjoyed it so we are thinking of doing it again and hopefully holding it annually.”
