REAG in New Year clean up

Date published: 07 January 2014

The Rochdale Environmental Action Group took to the streets of Rochdale for their first clean-up of the New Year on Saturday 4 January.

After returning from the Christmas and New Year’s break, members of the group divided into three teams.

  • Team A cleaned Milkstone Road, Devon Street, William Street, Essex Street, Sussex Street, Henry Street, Suffolk Street, Mere Street and Castlemere Street.
  • Team B cleaned Pullman Street, Pomona Street, Penrith Street, Pike Street, Cecile Street and Clifford Street.
  • Team C cleaned Caton Street, St.Chad Close, Back Drake Street, Ann Street, Church Stile and School Lane.

Ghulam Rasul Shahzad OBE said: “The issues in the area are the litter caused by those customers who come to the area, enjoy their food or ice cream and while driving off, throw their litter on the streets.”

Mr Shahzad also explained that the group feel the implementation of the Environment Legislation and the Litter Act is vital for the cleanliness of the town centre.

REAG members have been raising the importance of a clean environment and its impact on the community and businesses in the area. But, with the amount of litter they collect every Saturday, they feel that the only way to improve the environment and reduce litter is the enforcement of the Environment Legislation and Litter Act. REAG members would like to see the implementation of this legislation in the Borough in general and Milkstone & Deeplish in particular.
