Kirkholt’s first-ever civic Christmas tree

Date published: 23 December 2013

There's a lot more festive cheer on Kirkholt this year.

The estate has just taken delivery of a huge 30-foot Christmas tree – the first time it has had a tree provided by the council.

The tree – proudly displayed opposite the Strand shopping parade - has been organised by local councillor Richard Farnell.

He said: “I was asked by quite a few residents why Kirkholt did not have a public tree, when so many other areas of the town had one, including Norden, Milnrow and Castleton. So I set about raising the cash so we could have one on the estate.

“It was touch and go whether we got it put up in time, but council highways and parks staff pulled out all the stops. They have done the estate proud. We now have a big illuminated tree right in the middle of the estate. And Kirkholt has the only tree in the borough with flashing lights.”

“After such a tough year, I am really pleased there is a little more festive cheer on Kirkholt this Christmas. It has gone down really well with local residents, especially children.”

Karen Johnston, of Hill Top Drive, said: “The tree looks wonderful lit up and it’s so big – you can see it from all over the estate. It’s about time we had something to smile about. It cheers you up every time you walk past it.”

Councillor Farnell says he will be using his ward funds to ensure Kirkholt has a public tree every Christmas.
