Become part of Home Watch

Date published: 07 December 2013

The Rochdale South Neighbourhood Policing Team is encouraging members of the community to work together in order to reduce crime in the area.

You can help by becoming a part of Home Watch, sometimes referred to as a Neighbourhood Watch.

Regardless of where you live, your community will probably experience crime. Some people shrug it off and assume they won’t be affected by crime, or believe nothing can be done. Whereas, in fact, a great deal can be done to prevent crime, although the Police cannot do it alone. Each of us has a vital role to play in crime prevention.

Local residents have a specialised knowledge of their local community which is hard for police officers to match. For example, you may notice someone trespassing in a garden as a stranger, whereas a police officer wouldn’t know if it was the home owner or the gardener. It’s this type of knowledge and awareness that can make a difference.

The Police cannot do their job without the eyes and ears of the people reporting suspicious circumstances and the crimes taking place. By letting the Police know of anything suspicious you see or hear, you are helping to reduce the opportunities for crime to occur. The more difficult it can be made for criminals, the less likely it is for crime to occur.

What is a Home Watch scheme?

A Home Watch scheme is simply neighbours getting together to help cut local crime by taking action.

The main goal of Home Watch is creating communities that care, which will in turn bring about a reduction in crime.

The activity of Watch members can foster a new community spirit and belief to tackle problems. At the same time, you feel secure, knowing your neighbours are keeping an eye on your property.

Other benefits include crime prevention ideas, the knowledge someone is looking out for your home throughout the year, weekly emails from your local Neighbourhood Police Team with up-to-date good news stories as well as monthly newsletters, which include crime statistics and other important information for your specific area such as crime prevention events, along with crime alert emails.
