Healthwatch Rochdale and working partners host young carers event

Date published: 02 December 2013

Healthwatch Rochdale renewed their working partnership with Hopwood Hall College when they organised an informative event surrounding young carers.

Held in partnership with Family Action and the Carers Resource Centre the event was conceived as a way of looking at barriers that young carers may face that would deter them from accessing the Adult Carers service.

The event delivered an engaging, informative and interesting evening with performances from The HND Performing Arts students who delivered hard hitting performances on the day. Two young people talked about their experiences as young carers and the audience engaged in table top discussions surrounding various young carer scenarios.

Presentations were also part of the evening with Andrea Ashton from Family Action and Dan McEwan, from the Carers Resource Centre giving interesting presentations about their services. Further information regarding the Student Support Service was provided by Nimisha Mistry.

Recent research has shown that only 2.4% of young adults aged between 18 and 24 years old are actually accessing the Adult Carer service.

Previously, under the banner of Voices4Wellbeing, the Healthwatch Rochdale team had worked with Hopwood Hall College to hold very successful events on the themes of ‘Drug and Alcohol Misuse’ and ‘Mental Health and Young People’.
