Huge increase in sexual offences in Rochdale

Date published: 01 December 2013

There has been a 39% increase in sexual offences in the last year in Rochdale, a report reveals.

Burglary is said to remain a concern, especially with the darker nights and police are patrolling hotspot areas and encouraging residents to safeguard their homes to deter burglars.

Police are also visiting scrap dealers and second hand retailers to disrupt the sale of stolen goods.

Residents can see how police are performing thanks to the new-style performance report published by the Police and Crime Commissioner, Tony Lloyd.

Mr Lloyd has also published a report outlining his activities in the borough over the past year.

Mr Lloyd said: “It’s really important that local people can make a judgement on how police are performing in their area.

“This report gives a rounded view of how policing works in Rochdale. And it’s not about spin – it shows not just the things that are going well, but the areas of concern and, importantly, what police are doing about it.

“Until now, local people have really only been able to rely on statistics, which as we all know don’t really give the full picture. Under the previous Police Authority regime GMP was weighed down with performance targets. Well, I’ve done away with those and instead Rochdale residents can get a more holistic view of how police are working to keep them safe.”

Mr Lloyd added that Rochdale residents could also get a clear picture of what he has been doing since he’s been elected.

“This report means that local people in Rochdale can see what I’ve been doing on their behalf.”
