REAG extends its activities to Wardleworth

Date published: 25 November 2013

Rochdale Environmental Action Group (REAG), in cooperation with the residents, has extended its activities to Wardleworth.

Last Saturday (23 November), REAG’s team visited various parts of the Wardleworth and spoke to the shopkeepers, youths and the residents. They explained to them the aims and objectives of the REAG and asked them to join the campaign to improve the environment of the Borough of Rochdale.

Future clean ups will be held in Wardleworth area and residents, businesses and youths will join the group.

Rochdale Environmental Action Group (REAG) is also working with the local councillors, council officers, schools, businesses, residents and local media to raise awareness of the issue of litter and rubbish in the area.

REAG feels that the enforcement of environmental laws is the only way forward to improve the environment.

A spokesman said: "Most people who come for take away food, either throw their rubbish outside their cars or leave it under their cars. For the last one and a half year members of the REAG have been trying to educate residents, businesses and customers.

"REAG would also like to see the appointment of Environment Community Wardens with powers to fine and issue tickets to those responsible for causing litter and rubbish. It will help improve not only the environment but also increase revenue for the local authority.

"REAG is campaigning to improve environment in the Borough and asking the Rochdale Council to take immediate steps about improving the condition of the derelict buildings and open areas which are being used for fly tipping.

"In the light of the various physical developments and the rubbish and litter on the streets, Rochdale Town Centre does not present a positive image to those coming to Rochdale first time.

"REAG and the community would like to see the derelict buildings being improved and open areas used for growing vegetables, flowers and fruit trees."
