Hundreds turn up to St Martin's Christmas Fair

Date published: 24 November 2013

Hundreds of people turned up to St Martin's Church in Castleton, for their annual Christmas Fair - people were queuing outside before the doors even opened.

Barry Wild, a Reader at the church, said: "We didn't open until 10:30am but we had people waiting for us to let them in."

The Christmas Fair included bottle stalls, home made cards and cakes, a tombola, raffles, soft toys and a brigade stall.

"Everything has gone," said Barry.

As well as stalls, the fair had music played by Yearsley Brass Band and performances by the Helen O'Grady Drama Academy.

Wendy Orrell, Principal of the Academy, said: "It has been lovely to help and get involved with the fair."

The academy are users of the church premises and offered their help with the fair. "I think we have eaten them out of house and home because all of the
parents went along," said Wendy.

Organisers of the fair estimate that up to 400 people attended and they hope to have raised near to £1,000.

"Overall it has been a good day,” said Barry. "It is a community event to bring people in to the church so it is nice that so many people have been."
