Efit issued after two bogus officials steal money from elderly woman in Heywood

Date published: 22 November 2013

Two men pretending to be from the Council stole money from the home of an elderly woman.

The burglary happened on Tuesday 5 November 2013, when the woman, who is in her 90s, was in her home on Orchard Street in Heywood.

Sometime between 2.30pm and 2.45pm, the woman heard noises coming from her kitchen window at the back of the house.

She went into the kitchen and saw two men stood outside. The woman opened her back door and the men told her they were from the Council and were checking the windows.

The pair came into the house and one went into the living room and upstairs, while the other man asked the woman for a cup of tea. The victim became suspicious and asked them for identification, but at this point the other man walked back into the kitchen and said there was no need for a drink as they had to go now.

Both men left via the back door and walked around the house onto Orchard Street.

A short time later, the woman discovered cash had been stolen.

An e-fit of the man that went upstairs has been produced, and he is described as white, around 20 years old, slim build, with fair hair. He was wearing dark clothing.

The second man is described as very thin, around 20 years old and was wearing a dark hoodie with the hood up all the time.

Detective Constable Dan Daly based at Middleton police station said: “I hope the rest of the community is as sickened as the police are to hear how these two men have stolen from this elderly lady in this manner.

“The victim is understandably distraught that she has been violated in such a way in her own home, a place where she should rightfully be able to feel safe and secure.

“The lady has worked with police to produce an e-fit of one of the men, and I am asking for anyone that thinks they recognise this person, to get in touch.

“Imagine if this were your grandma or elderly relative that had fallen victim to these two callous thieves – if you have any knowledge at all of the people that committed this burglary, then please tell us what you know. If you don’t want to pass on information directly to police, you can do this anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Officers at Middleton police station can be contacted directly on 0161 856 8742.
