Welcoming back the Armed Forces

A group of key stage 3 pupils and staff went to Rochdale Town Hall this week to welcome back the armed forces after their tour of Afghanistan. I know that all those who attended really enjoyed the spectacle. Well done to all concerned.

Sky Sports for Living – Paralympic Athlete

We were delighted to welcome Clare Cashmore into school on Wednesday to attend Key Stage 3 assembly and give the pupils her inspirational story of overcoming her disability and becoming a top athlete. Clare then held a swimming session with some of our strongest swimmers (and staff). A fantastic opportunity for everybody concerned and Clare will be supporting us during the year.

Donations to Xmas Fayre

A big thank you to all parents, carers and members of the local community for the donations and prizes for our Xmas Fayre. Your generosity is much appreciated.

Anti Bullying Week

The national theme this year is `The Future is Ours, Fun, Safe and Connected`. Classes have been taking part in activities and special lessons related to the theme. Anti Bullying wristbands have been given out during the week to pupils.

KS5

Name of Intern: Maria
1st Rotation Placement: Rochdale Infirmary Clinical Assessment Unit
Job role – Clinical Assessment Role

Intern’s comments – “I am enjoying my intern placement, I find the job really interesting and I am kept very busy. I really like knowing what I am doing each day without having to ask the nurses.”

Colleague comments – “Maria is working really hard on the assessment ward. She is working independently on many tasks including making beds, folding and storing laundry, serving tea, coffee and lunches, always checking patient notes above the beds to recognise if diabetic or nil by mouth. The staff are extremely pleased with how Maria uses her initiative including identifying jobs that need to be done e.g. filling water jugs”

The Gardening Project which takes place every Tuesday with Dave Wilmore from the Youth Service has been running successfully and seen 6 of our 6th Formers: Tom N, Tommy, Thomas S, Fahad, Kyle and Jordan now trained up to use the manual tools such as: hedge trimmers, shears, spades, shovels, bow saws, wood saws, loppers and the spade pick.

In addition, three students have passed the training to use (under supervision) the following power tools: strimmer, lawnmower, leaf blower and hedge cutters, with another two students currently undergoing training.

The group have now completed eight gardens to an extremely high standard and have been mentioned in the Rochdale Observer on two occasions and within Rochdale Borough-wide Housings weekly newsletters.

These young men are learning new skills and gaining the confidence to work and solve problems independently whilst making a positive difference to the lives of some of our boroughs most vulnerable residents.

RBH staff are so overwhelmed by the positive impact the group have made and have invited the group along to a borough-wide team meeting to do a presentation.

Dave said “I could not have wished for better outcomes, the group’s work ethic, enthusiasm, manners, and above all the willingness to help others is astonishing and they are a credit to themselves, their parents/guardians and Redwood 6th Form.”

Well done to Kyle who completed a Bungee jump for Christies. Kyle completed his 120ft jump a few weeks ago and has collected an amazing £265.50. Well done Kyle.

Also congratulations to one of our former students turned staff member who has completed his apprentice training. Mark Welsby attended Rochdale Town Hall on Thursday to collect his Award certificate from the Mayor. A fantastic achievement Mark!

Thank you to all who purchased the cakes from the Cake Sale last Thursday. We raised £37 for Children In Need.

Achievements

This week Student of the Week is Sohail. Sohail has settled into 6th Form really well. He always has a smile to offer and has been interacting really well in his lessons.
The Most Improved student of the week is Qudsiyyah. Qudsiyyah has been generally well behaved and has been socially interacting more with others at social times.
Well done to you both, Keep it up.

KS3

Well done to those who took part in the P2P (playground to podium) football games, they all represented Redwood in a great way.

Some Year 8/9 pupils took part in a focus group, they discussed in detail bullying and it’s negative effects, they also discussed strategies to improve student wellbeing in school. The group also participated in a number of team building activities designed to highlight and educate about the importance of working as a team and the major negative effect on a group mis-behaving individuals can have.

Some students from Blue and Purple groups went to the Town Centre to watch the Royal Fusiliers homecoming parade. The students were really interested and asked lots of great questions. Everyone was extremely well behaved and were a credit to the school. Well Done.

KS4

This week Bridging Year have started to build a kit car!

Redwood brownies are back! Students from class 4B make them and sell them to Oulderhill students for their class enterprise. Mrs Ali said ‘This week the girls from our class have been busy making chocolate brownies for their class enterprise. The girls worked very well and they helped each other. I was very proud of them.’

This week students have been working on their final piece of their Art accreditation! They had to create a piece of art that had aspects of Monet, Suerat and Van Gogh.
As part of working towards independence 4M visited All-in-one garden centre to look at the Christmas decorations.
