Be the police commissioner for a day

Date published: 15 November 2013

Young people across Greater Manchester are being offered the chance to be Police and Crime Commissioner for a day.

The competition has been launched by Tony Lloyd to mark one year in post as the region’s commissioner.

Mr Lloyd has written to all secondary schools in the region to encourage young people to enter the competition.

The winner will spend the day with Tony, meet the Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy, and spend time at some of GMP’s specialist departments such as the dog and horse units. They will also be presented with a special certificate and a commemorative gift to mark the occasion.

Mr Lloyd said: “Young people are our future and make a positive contribution to our communities. But they are often too easily written of as the culprits of anti-social behaviour and other problems in our neighbourhoods when the reality is they are very much part of the solution. We need to listen to their views and give them the opportunity to get involved in decision-making and bring communities together – that’s why I’m launching this competition.”

To enter, young people are asked to submit an essay, artwork, or a video, audio or powerpoint presentation on the following topic:

  • How I would make Greater Manchester a safer place for young people if I was Police and Crime Commissioner

Mr Lloyd added: “I’ve visited schools, youth councils and youth clubs across Greater Manchester, meeting thousands of young people and they are a fountain of ideas about how to make our communities better places to live. I’m looking forward to seeing the competition entries and confident about handing over the Commissioner reins for the day.”

Written entries should be no longer than 500 words, presentations no more than 10 slides, video or audio must be five minutes or less and in a format that can be submitted electronically. Artwork should be in a format that can also be scanned and sent electronically as a jpeg.

The competition is open to young people of high school age (11 to 16) who attend a school in Greater Manchester.

The competition will remain open until the schools break up for Christmas, with the winning entry revealed early in the new year.
