Rochdale falls silent
Date published: 11 November 2013
Rochdale town centre fell silent this morning (Monday 11 November) to honour those who have and are still serving their country.
Mayor Peter Rush, councillors and Rochdale residents gathered opposite the War Memorial to stand for a two minute silence.
During the service, prayers were read and the national anthem was sung.
Yvonne Pickering said: “My son has been in the Royal Marines for twelve years. He has lost a lot of friends during that time and I think it is important to remember the modern conflicts as well as the past conflicts.”
Gillian Rushton attends the service every year as a way to honour her nephew: “My nephew was in Afghanistan so I come for that reason and I make sure to come every year.”
Sue Stevenson, who attended with Gillian, said: “My son is home now but he was in the 2RRF which is the Fusiliers. It is just nice to come along and remember everyone. I am usually at work when they hold the service but I’m not today so I’m glad I could come.”
Andrea Freeman found today’s service particularly hard as her ex husband, who was in the Royal Signals, died yesterday. She said: “Today has been special but it has been hard as well. It has been nice to come and remember him.”
