Half term holiday club

Thank you to parents /carers for your support last week which made the holiday club programme such a success. Various activities and treats were organized and a special Halloween party was the highlight of the week! Also a big `thanks` to staff for their crucial support.

Student Council

The council members’ shortlisted seven students to become the Chair and Vice Chair of the Council for 2013 / 14. They are Mark, Dwayne, Ellis, Jack, Paul, Lilly and Garry. An election will be held in the next two weeks. The meeting was attended by Mrs Sherriff, Chair of Governors and Parent Governor Mr Ray Walton who both enjoyed their session with the council members.

Anti Bullying Week 18 – 22 November

The national theme this year is `The Future is Ours, Fun, Safe and Connected’. Classes will be taking part in activities and special lessons related to the theme. Anti Bullying wristbands will be given out during the week to pupils.

Post 16 Options Open Day

Thank you to those parents and carers of Year 11 students who attended the Post 16 Options Open Day. The sessions were very informative and gave parents the information on a variety of courses available in the 6th Form, Internship Programmes and the Bridging Year Programme for September 2014.

Key Stage 3

Year 8 & 9 Yellow has been exploding Volcanoes in Geography.
Pupils who have Design & Technology lesson made pop-up Halloween cards to display in their homes.

Year 7 Red have been using colourful light toys they bought in Blackpool to enhance the pupils enjoyment and interaction with a bonfire story!
Year 8 & 9 Red made vegetable soup and really enjoyed eating it!!
In after school cookery club pupils made apple crumble and as Shane quotes “Scab Bol” Spaghetti Bolognaise.

Robert had great fun making a “mess” and chocolate apples in a session with Mrs Wilson!

Key stage 4

After attending a meeting with the BBC at Media City in Salford Mr Alcock was asked to ‘perform’ live on BBC Radio Manchester and discuss live on air how Redwood have become involved in the BBC Schools Report programme. He talked about how beneficial the project was for students and how they had developed their literacy skills through reporting local events. This successful appearance on the Radio might open up the door for a new media related career as a broadcaster? (I’m thinking The one Show? / X Factor?)

At Redwood we think it is very important to look towards the future. Some of our students went to the Futures First event at Rochdale town hall. Local post-16 providers had stalls set up for all the students in the borough to look at.

The Bridging Year held a Coffee Morning on 24 October for their parents/carers. KS4 staff and students were also invited. The Bridgers made all the cakes and refreshments themselves and everyone had a jolly good time.

Key Stage 5

In Art on Friday, the students continue to work on their drawing skills by developing their portrait work. They have been studying the work of Pablo Picasso and created their own Cubist portrait based on Picasso's work.

In Horticulture on Wednesday, the students have been extremely busy planting Spring bulbs. They have been learning how to plant bulbs in pots and containers. They have been planting daffodils and tulips, all ready to start blooming in Spring.

On Wednesday we held a Post 16 Open Day. Prospective parents/carers and students visited us to learn about all the different subjects and skills we learn in 6th Form. The visitors enjoyed a tour of the department and chatted to staff and current students. A big thank you to everyone who visited, if anyone would like another visit or wants more information about any aspect of 6th Form please contact the department on 01706 751892.

In Vocational Education, the group have been learning about jobs in Sports and Leisure. This week they have been thinking about what it would be like to be an athlete. Kenny quite fancied himself as a professional Cricketer. The group looked at some other sports too, such as Football, Swimming and Skateboarding and had lots of fun dressing up and taking part in the different sports.

This week Student of the Week is Billie. Billie is always smiling. She has been interacting and responding well to others and has been lifting her head up more.
The Most Improved student of the week is Raymond. Raymond has settled into 6th Form really well. He has been helpful on the school transport, helping a lower key stage student stay calm and settled. He has been smiling more and generally behaving well.

Well done to you both, Keep it up.

Staff comments – “Josh has been amazing on placement. He can work independently in the medical records filing room.
