On Track Dog Training reach finals of competition

Date published: 08 November 2013

Dogs and their owners who are part of On Track Dog Training School took part in the heats of a new competition held by the Kennel Club and were placed high enough to reach the finals.

Emily Arch and Jasper won the Border Collie class, Lucy Newsome and Ruby came second and Peter Yates and Pepper were placed fifth, giving them a place in the finals at Crufts.

Cath Phillips who runs One Track Dog Training said: “I had goose pimples all up my arms and a tear in my eye as they were presented with their rosettes and prizes.”

Shelley Sandiford and dog Sam didn’t get a place for the finals but Sam was chosen to be part of the Kennel Club Demonstration Team.

The competition, which is open to all owners who have received a bronze award, is known as the Special Pre-Beginner Stakes. Heats were held up and down the country at various obedience shows.

Altogether four handlers from On Track Dog Training qualified for the northern semi-finals.

There were a total of 33 dogs in the competition split into two groups - Border Collies/Working Sheepdogs and All Breeds. The test to see the dogs and their handlers reach the finals comprised of heel work, a demonstration of play, standing the dog for a full examination, manners through a gate or doorway, recall and a stay exercise.

Cath added: “All our dogs worked very well and were a real credit to their handlers. What an achievement for all of our dogs. They were brilliant and a true reflection of the patience, understanding and sheer hard work of their owners to bring out the very best in their dogs.”
